Fossil Cake

Earlier this month I got to spend a few days with one of my best friends, Preston. He is an extremely talented violinist and he came to Moose Jaw to adjudicate a music competition. So I swooped down to Moose Jaw and kidnapped him and brought him to Saskatoon for a few days :) . It just so happened to be his birthday so I made him a cake!

I’ve known Preston for about 20 years now. When we were younger we teased Preston because he always wanted to go fossil hunting. So when I asked him what kind of cake he’d want, the first thing he asked for was a fossil cake. I did some looking online and some brainstorming and came up with this cake (I can’t take all the credit for this cake. I modeled it after this one that I came across online).

First I made a “fossil” out of white fondant. This was one of the easier sculptures I’ve done because the rougher it was, the better it looked. I let the “bones” dry for a while and then painted them with highly watered down brown gel food colouring. It settled in all of the cracks and tears and looked great! I added some brownish red highlights. I left the teeth fairly white, but added a tinge of brown to make them look old.

Then I placed the fossil on the already baked and iced cake and covered the whole cake in a mixture of Oreo crumbs and graham cracker crumbs to look like dirt. This also made this cake pretty easy to do because it didn’t have to be pretty as it was going to be covered in “dirt!” I used an artists paintbrush to uncover part of the fossil for the reveal so it didn’t look like a pile of dirt.

Preston was ecstatic!

We sat and visited for a bit and then he got to work digging out his fossil.

After his work was done, he cut into the cake and we all enjoyed.

The cake was layered white and dark chocolate to suggest the layers in the earth. It was filled with white chocolate icing and iced with dark chocolate buttercream. And again. the “dirt” was a mixture of Oreo crumbs and graham cracker crumbs.

This was actually one of the easiest cakes I’ve done with the best results. Who doesn’t love playing with their food?! Preston even covered the fossil up after we ate part of the cake and he uncovered it again the next day.

Happy birthday Preston! I was so happy to have you stay with us and to celebrate your birthday with you! I miss you!

  1. That looks great! I see that you had him uncover it himself (which I wished I did). Thanks for referring back to me. You did awesome!
